Harlem Protest Demonstration
In May, 1993 the Harm Reduction Coalition, a predecessor organization to Cures-Not-Wars, in collaboration with Rock Against Racism (RAR) and the International Coalition for Addict Self-Help (ICASH) accompanied by community activists drove a large flatbed truck with live bands to Congressman Charles Rangel's Manhattan office to demand an investigation of resistance to ibogaine development. As Chairman of the Select Committee on Narcotics Abuse and Control Congressman Rangel played an important part in opening an ibogaine dialog between proponents of the drug and the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). The poster below targeted Herb Kleber and Joseph Califano of the Columbia University's Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse as responsible parties for blocking ibogaine development within the federal government. Bands played for hours intermixed with speakers who provided ibogaine information to the Harlem community. Three months later in August, the FDA approved studies of ibogaine on human subjects.
